Rear Extension & Balcony
Tickenham, North Somerset
This project involved the design of a contemporary single-storey rear extension to a detached dwelling in Tickenham, positioned to maximize panoramic views toward the Mendip Hills. The architectural response focuses on a clean aesthetic that seamlessly expands the home's living space into the sloping garden landscape.
The exterior features natural timber cladding beneath a crisp pitched roofline, creating a warm, modern contrast with the main house. A structural corner window opens up the living space visually, while an extended timber deck area and a new elevated balcony—complete with a frameless glass balustrade—provide uninterrupted transitions between indoor and outdoor entertaining spaces.
Internally, the extension delivers a dramatic, light-filled living volume. The space centers on a striking vaulted ceiling with exposed oak scissor trusses, flooded with natural daylight from a large overhead rooflight. Large sliding glass doors connect the internal lounge directly to the new deck, offering a practical yet architecturally striking family room that enhances its rural Somerset setting.
