Annexe Extension to
Grade II Listed Farmhouse

Pensford, near Bristol

This project required a sensitive, contextual response to introduce a new residential annexe and boot room extension to a historic Grade II listed building. Located in a rural setting near Pensford, the design preserves the character of the original farm buildings while creating comfortable, energy-efficient modern living spaces.

The external envelope utilizes natural stone masonry and traditional clay roof tiles that mirror the existing vernacular. A seamless glass-link provides a delicate connection between the main house and the new stone annexe, minimizing the impact on the historic fabric. The garden elevation introduces an oak-framed veranda with extensive glazing, incorporating roof-mounted solar PV panels to integrate renewable energy subtly into a heritage asset.

Internally, the annexe features an open-plan living and kitchen space defined by exposed oak trusses and natural flagstone flooring. A dedicated boot room extension provides practical utility space, utilizing a high vaulted ceiling and traditional timber doors. The project demonstrates how historic farm buildings can be thoughtfully extended for modern multi-generational living without losing their character.
